Professor Phil Howlett

Phil Howlett is Professor of Industrial and Applied Mathematics at the University of South Australia. His principal research interests are applied analysis with a special interest in modelling of realistic systems, analytic perturbation of linear operators, optimization, applied optimal control with applications to optimal driving strategies for trains and solar-powered racing cars and stochastic control with a particular interest in water cycle management. Phil Howlett has won numerous national competitive grants and is currently Leader of Theme 3 (Optimal Control and Scheduling) in the Rail CRC. Professor Howlett was the National Director of the Australian Mathematics in Industry Study Group from 2000-2003 and the Director of the Centre for Industrial and Applied mathematics at the University of South Australia from 1999-2004. He has supervised 6 successful PhD students.
