Professor Nigel Bean
Professor of Applied Mathematics
University of Adelaide
Nigel Bean is Professor of Applied Mathematics and Deputy Head of the
School of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Adelaide. He holds
an Honours degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Adelaide
and earned his PhD from the Statistical Laboratory at the University of
Cambridge in 1993, under the supervision of Prof Frank Kelly, FRS. His
thesis focussed on mathematical modelling of a
variety of topics in communication networks.
Nigel then returned to the University of Adelaide as a PostDoctoral
Researcher. In 1995 he was appointed to a Tenurable lectureship in the
Department of Applied Mathematics and started working in an
Adjunct role with the Teletraffic Research Centre (TRC) - a
commercially-funded research centre that focussed on the
telecommunications industry . In 2000 he became Deputy Director of the
TRC on a part-time basis and in 2002 took on the role as Director on a
full-time basis. In 2004 he took up the role as the Professor of Applied
Mathematics.
Nigel's research interests are broad, but all based around Stochastic
modelling and the modelling of real world systems. Most of his
publications are in the field of matrix-analytic methods, and
modelling of telecommunication networks and protocols. A particularly
successful commercial project involved the development and
implementations of a raw-material optimisation system for Dunlop
Flexible Foams.
